Susan Derby Director

Susan is a freelance writer, focusing on business communications such as website content, newsletters, and magazine articles. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism from Ohio University. Susan was the managing editor for an Illinois-based Internet marketing company for eight years. She also has worked as an associate editor of a monthly financial magazine, a project writer for Tiger Electronics, and freelance writer for numerous trade publications.

She is currently attending Baker College (in Muskegon) to earn her teaching certification in Secondary Education with focuses in English and math. Much of her interest in teaching stems from her positive experiences on staff at Owasippe Scout Reservation. She was a trail guide and director of the High Adventure backpacking program at Owasippe, and enjoyed sharing her passion for hiking and backpacking with Scouts and leaders. Susan then served on the staff training team for five years, helping first-year staff become familiar with camp operations, teaching merit badges, staff duties, and more.

Committed to volunteer work, Susan runs a knitting group at a local convalescent facility, adopts two miles of road with her husband, and gives her time and writing talents to the Owasippe Staff Association. She received the Honorary Life Member award from the Owasippe Staff Association in 2008.

Susan lives in Whitehall, MI, with her husband and young daughter.
