Learning Through Experience
“EXPERIENCE IT!” appears on the business cards and other materials of the Owasippe Outdoor Education Center. It’s a two-word challenge as well as a simple description of how Education is delivered at OOEC. Some people call it “Experiential Education” other say it’s just a fun way to teach and learn.
Spread over almost 4,800 acres in West Central Michigan, OOEC is a unique facility where nature has been preserved and people have adapted to allow nature to be a functional part of Education. The indigenous forefathers learned from the earth and in the 21st Century OOEC combines that basic learning with the power of digital communications and personal experiences created for the learner.
A camper, student, participant (or whatever you want to be called) is challenged with experiences that causes analysis, question, curiosity, assumption of responsibility, self doubt and self esteem. Since every individual brings their personal experiences with them, there is truly individual learning as well as the benefit of building common knowledge with the others sharing the challenges.
Success, personal challenge and adventure all make-up the Owasippe experience. OOEC provides basic facilities for some programs at the Center while also making available the program and staff for other experiences. Paramount to OOEC is that all programs delivered at the Center are suitable for the purpose and limited to insure physical safety and emotional security.
As a “teacher” or a “learner” the Owasippe Outdoor Education Center is a place you will find valuable and unique for your purpose.
